The BCS Anti-Trust Violations No One Mentions

By admin at 28 May, 2010, 8:28 am

Recently read a relatively brief scholarly article about potential anti-trust issues related to the BCS. The two attorneys who wrote the piece (sadly I’ve not found a link) make a good argument on legal grounds. The simplified premise is that by granting six leagues automatic inclusion they gain an advantage in the recruitment of athletes [...]

Dr. You are reading the chart wrong

By admin at 18 May, 2010, 2:00 pm

PlayoffProblem.com gleefully reports the news that LA Times columnist Bill Plaschke says falling attendance for NCAA Division I basketball is due to the post-season format.
PlayoffProblem.com is a marketing element of the BCS. It exists to fight against a football playoff. That’s an important disclaimer to get out of the way.
Preserving the value of the regular [...]

Yet another officiating blunder

By admin at 16 April, 2010, 12:22 pm

I am coming to the conclusion that the NCAA hates game officials. Each year there is a new tweak that adds a layer for problems.
The big one this year is apparently going to be enforcing celebration penalties from the spot of the foul rather than end of the play. That means celebrate before the ball [...]

You can’t be Butler or Duke

By admin at 7 April, 2010, 4:55 am

Every time a school breaks out of the traditional spots the questions arise “How did they do it?” and “how can we copy it?”.
While you can follow the principles they employ, you can’t just do the exact same things because you aren’t Butler, or Gonzaga or Duke for that matter.

My almost totally baseless realignment theory

By admin at 6 April, 2010, 10:11 pm

OK, having read the various blog posts and articles that have emerged in the wake of the Final Four, here are my most recent realignment thoughts.
1. The WAC is expecting to lose at least one member. No other reason for Montana to suddenly pop-up on radar looking at a move to FBS. They have consistently [...]

Three Strikes

By admin at 19 March, 2010, 1:16 pm

It was a brief run.
The Sun Belt’s men’s basketball season has concluded with an 0 for post-season run.
Switching between video of the game and listening to the radio feed, I have to agree with the Westwood One announcers. They said several times that of all the two seeds in the field, K-State was probably the [...]

Thinking ahead to 96

By admin at 11 March, 2010, 2:52 pm

While waiting to see if UNT ends up being a 15 seed as expected let’s take a couple minutes to talk about the expected expansion of the bracket to 96, possibly as early as next year, though I doubt they can get the venues ironed out that quickly.
I’m opposed to 96 but I’m also opposed [...]

North Texas Clinches NCAA Bid

By admin at 10 March, 2010, 5:10 am

It took a see-saw battle to determine the Sun Belt’s NCAA bid.
Troy and North Texas after an almost cautious start threw caution to the wind in the first half and pushed a pace that led to a few sloppy plays and quite a bit of fast paced scoring. At the break Troy led 40-38.
The pace [...]

Clark Wins Scoring War to lead MT to NCAA Tournament

By admin at 9 March, 2010, 9:18 pm

Alysha Clark broke her Sun Belt Tournament scoring record with 48 points. The Blue Raiders defeat UALR 70-68 to clinch an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, as Butler’s three for UALR misses.
Clark was named tournament MVP. Setting the tournament scoring record in each game you play is an impressive path to the award.
